An Chomhdháil Cheilteach
An Chomhdháil Cheilteach (the Celtic Congress) was
founded in 1902 in order to promote the knowlege, use, and
appreciation of the languages and cultures of the six Celtic
countries. The national branches of the Congress meet in an
International Congress each year in order to help further
the above aims. The International Congress generally involves
lectures on a chosen theme, language classes, music, young
people’s activities, excursions in the local area and
literary evenings.

An Chrannóg
An Chrannóg is a Language and Cultural Centre in the
Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht in Co. Donegal which is encouraging
the wider use of Irish through its extensive range of educational
courses and community activities. Courses in Irish are offered,
as well as a range of cultural activities such as writing
and literature workshops, exhibitions and social evenings.

An Chultúrlann
Cultúrlann na hÉireann (meaning the cultural
centre of Ireland) is the home of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí
Éireann, the association of traditional musicians in
Ireland. The centre has a cultural information agency, a training
and education centre, a library of books and archive of traditional
recordings, a recording studio and a bar which often has Irish
traditional music and dance.

An tOireachtas
An tOireachtas, the main cultural festival in the Irish language,
is a celebration of Irish language and culture. It is organised
by Conradh na Gaeilge; the first half of the festival is held
in Dublin in May and the second part in a different location
every year around the end of October or the beginning of November.
There is a literary competition every year in poetry, journalism,
drama, short stories, and the novel. There are also competitions
in traditional singing (sean-nós), music and storytelling,
as well as exhibitions, set-dancing workshops, book launches,
and so on. The Oireachtas is held twice a year: in Dublin
in May and outside the capital in late October.

Áras Chrónáin in Clondalkin offers Irish

Uí Chadhain
Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain is the
Irish Language Acquisition and Maintenance Centre for NUI, Galway
and is situated in Carraroe in the Conamara Gaeltacht. Irish
language courses are offered to adults, including Irish and
non-Irish nationals, teachers and third-level students. Summer
courses for credit are also offered in Irish studies and Irish
language as well as certificate and higher diploma T.E.F.L courses
and an International writers’ course.

Beo!
Beo! (www.beo.ie) is an Internet magazine which was established
in May 2001. A new edition is available on the first day of
each month. The following are some of the sections in the
magazine: current affairs, language and culture, sport, learners'
section, arts, business and technology. There is also a discussion
forum which gives visitors to the site an opportunity to express
their views on articles published in the magazine or stories
that are making the headlines. Each article contains a comprehensive
glossary, thus making it possible to read it without having
to use a dictionary. The magazine is interactive as well;
in the case of some articles, for example, you can test your
knowledge of vocabulary contained in them.

Caife Úna
Caife Úna, a new café and contemporary cultural
oasis, opened on Monday, March 14th in Dublin city centre.
It is located at the bottom of Kildare Street, opposite the
Alliance Française, and in a building owned by the
Irish language organisation Comhdháil Náisiúnta
na Gaeilge. The café is managed by Úna Nic Gabhann
from Donegal and is open Monday - Friday, 8.00 a.m. - 6.00
p.m. From August 2005, the café will also open at night.
Caife Úna aims to provide tasty food, including breakfast,
lunch and afternoon tea. Special hot lunches every day. All
bread, scones and pastries made in-house every morning.
The café also caters for groups involved in cultural
activities (e.g. Irish language organisations) and rents the
space to them for meetings, book launches, annual dinners,
and other activities.

Comhluadar
Comhluadar provides support for parents who want to speak Irish
with their children. It provides an information service for
parents and advises on resources available for Irish-speaking
families; it provides an opportunity for families to meet others
in their area who are rearing families through Irish; it organises

EGT
EGT is a software and publishing company supporting minority-language
communities since 1990. EGT has translated the Apple Macintosh
system software into Irish: all of the software in the System
Folder which your computer uses to start up, has been localised
into Irish so that you can work in a totally Irish environment.
Special keyboard layouts, sorting routines, and other utilities
have been configured specifically in support of the needs
of the Irish-speaking user. Claris Works 4.0 is also available
in Irish as is MacWrite Pro 1.5GÉv3. The Irish versions
by EGT of Claris software are available from the usual Apple
outlets. A range of Gaelic fonts, including ogham fonts, is
available from EGT as are Irish language computer games (these
can be downloaded from the website below).

Foras na Gaeilge
Foras na Gaeilge is the new body responsible for the promotion
of the Irish language on the island of Ireland. Under and
in furtherance of Article 2 of the British-Irish Agreement
1999, an implementation body for language was established

Gael Linn
Gael Linn’s main aim is to promote the Irish language
and cultural heritage. It organises events all year round,

Oideas Gael
Oideas Gael is based in Gleann Cholm Cille in County Donegal.
It was founded in 1984 to promote the learning and use of
Irish and to foster Irish culture within the Gaeltacht and
elsewhere. The annual programme of courses and events achieves
the further aim of bringing together people of Irish and other
Celtic backgrounds to participate in everyday Gaeltacht life,
improve their fluency in Irish and enjoy the living culture.

TG4
TG4 is the national Irish language television station, which
came on air in October 1996. TG4 provides a comprehensive
schedule of award-winning Irish language programming (including
its own daily news service) with an emphasis on original material.
The channel’s Irish language schedule currently comprises
four and a half hours daily. It provides a subscription-based
service to those who wish to view its programmes online.
