Irish Language
Courses in the Gaeltacht
The Gaeltacht
The Irish speaking regions in the country are called na Gaeltachtaí.
The three largest Gaeltacht areas are in Counties Donegal, Galway,
and Kerry. There are also small Gaeltacht areas in Counties
Cork, Mayo, Waterford, and Meath. The amount of Irish being
spoken outside the Gaeltacht is continually increasing, as is
evident from the growing demand for Irish language classes and
primary and post-primary schooling through Irish. More and more
families and individuals in non-Gaeltacht areas are choosing
to live their lives bilingually. More information on Gaeltacht
areas can be found at this website:

Oideas Gael
Oideas Gael is based in Gleann Cholm Cille in County Donegal.
It was founded in 1984 to promote the learning and use of Irish
and to foster Irish culture within the Gaeltacht and elsewhere.
The annual programme of courses and events achieves the further
aim of bringing together people of Irish and other Celtic backgrounds
to participate in everyday Gaeltacht life, improve their fluency
in Irish and enjoy the living culture.
Courses are held between mid-June and early September and at
other times during the year as well. Each year they attract
learners from all over Ireland and Britain, as well as from
countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia
and virtually every Western European country.
Each course contains three or more levels - beginner, intermediate
and advanced, and usually lasts a week. There are also cultural
activity courses available in traditional music and singing,
set-dancing, archaeology, hill-walking, painting and tapestry
weaving.

Comharchumann Ráth Cairn
The Gaeltacht of Ráth Cairn is situated in County Meath
and has a unique history. Between 1935 and 1937, as part of
a scheme initiated by 'Muintir na Gaeltachta' and the Land Commission,
a total of 41 families migrated from designated 'congested districts'
in Conamara to four Athboy townlands in County Meath. In exchange
for the properties they left behind, each family was provided
with a house, 22 acres of land, basic livestock and implements,
and a National school was provided. Surrounded by English speakers,
the new settlers were left to their own initiative to develop
as a community and did so without losing their language. Ráth
Cairn was not officially recognised as a Gaeltacht area until
1967. In 1973 Comharchumann Ráth Cairn was formed to
plan and undertake development in the area.
As well as organising courses for teenagers and third-level
students, Ráth Cairn offers weekend language courses
for adults, custom-designed courses for professional groups
and organisations and cultural holidays (set-dancing classes,
singing, sean-nós dancing, céilí, tours
and cultural talks).
