Gael Linn
Gael Linn’s main aim is to promote the Irish language and cultural heritage. For over 35 years, it has done pioneering work for the development of Ireland, particularly through the promotion of the Irish language, Irish music and arts in general and through the advancement of the social and economic life of the country, north and south of the border.

Its main aims are:

  • To promote the Irish language and cultural heritage;
  • To contribute constructively to the educational, cultural and economic development of the country;
  • To provide a livelihood in Ireland for our own people, especially Irish speakers in the Gaeltacht and elsewhere;
  • To encourage young Irish people to study their own culture and heritage as well as the cultures of other European nations.

Gael Linn has played an important role in promoting the language, especially amongst young people. The best example of this is the annual arts festival, Slógadh. The competition was founded by Gael Linn in 1969/70 and up to 30,000 people took part in it each year. Some former participants include Clannad, and Liam Ó Maonlaí of the rock group Hothouse Flowers.

Gael Linn also organises other events all year round, such as Irish language courses and specialist occupational courses for adults; post-primary and third-level debating competitions; and quizzes for primary school children and adults. They also sell a selection of items, for example, cassettes and CDs, hand-knitted goods and books.

One of Gael Linn’s newest ventures is the café 3-D at 3 Dawson Street — you will find details on the directory page.

In the summer of 2004, Gael Linn released Seoltaí Séidte as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. This package contains two CDs of music and songs originally released in the late Fifties and early Sixties on the old 78 records. There is an accompanying booklet containing detailed information about the singers and musicians and the words of the songs, plus translation into English.
